Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Telecoms, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.63%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.52%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.05%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which rose 2.18% or 3.19 points to trade at 149.30 at the close. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) added 0.91% or 0.59 points to end at 65.61 and Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) was up 0.77% or 0.46 points to 60.08 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 6.05% or 7.01 points to trade at 108.79 in late trade. Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) declined 3.32% or 1.72 points to end at 50.03 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 2.15% or 2.76 points to 125.79.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Viacom B Inc (NASDAQ:VIAB) which rose 13.86% to 42.56, Endo International PLC (NASDAQ:ENDP) which was up 12.00% to settle at 31.83 and United Rentals Inc (NYSE:URI) which gained 7.87% to close at 64.87.
The worst performers were United Continental Holdings Inc (NYSE:UAL) which was down 9.97% to 52.76 in late trade, Alliance Data Systems Corporation (NYSE:ADS) which lost 7.03% to settle at 202.60 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which was down 6.80% to 11.52 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Carbylan Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CBYL) which rose 30.77% to 0.8189, Capricor Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CAPR) which was up 24.85% to settle at 4.1700 and Concordia Healthcare Corp (NASDAQ:CXRX) which gained 25.05% to close at 30.50.
The worst performers were Sarepta Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:SRPT) which was down 44.09% to 11.020 in late trade, Hercules Offshore Inc (NASDAQ:HERO) which lost 40.63% to settle at 2.2500 and Silicom Ltd (NASDAQ:SILC) which was down 16.52% to 27.99 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2076 to 1236 and 50 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1320 fell and 1251 advanced, while 70 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 4.29% to 13.85.
In commodities trading, Gold for June delivery was down 0.30% or 3.80 to $1250.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 1.49% or 0.66 to hit $43.52 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract fell 2.07% or 0.95 to trade at $44.85 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.07% to 1.1288, while USD/JPY fell 0.35% to 109.46.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.07% at 94.61.
