Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Basic Materials and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 1.51%, while the S&P 500 index fell 2.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 3.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which rose 2.74% or 1.15 points to trade at 42.93 at the close. Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE:PG) added 1.74% or 2.98 points to end at 174.52 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.44% or 8.48 points to 598.68 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 8.76% or 1.93 points to trade at 20.11 in late trade. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 7.32% or 12.72 points to end at 161.02 and Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) shed 4.48% or 22.88 points to 487.46.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B (NYSE:TAP) which rose 5.43% to 56.90, DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which was up 4.38% to settle at 72.38 and Cboe Global Markets Inc (NYSE:CBOE) which gained 3.62% to close at 212.84.
The worst performers were Monolithic Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:MPWR) which was down 10.28% to 838.63 in late trade, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which lost 9.65% to settle at 177.72 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) which was down 9.54% to 107.98 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sify Technologies Limited (NASDAQ:SIFY) which rose 99.61% to 0.66, Conifer Holding Inc (NASDAQ:CNFR) which was up 74.24% to settle at 1.15 and BranchOut Food Inc (NASDAQ:BOF) which gained 69.00% to close at 3.38.
The worst performers were Windtree Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:WINT) which was down 60.67% to 3.19 in late trade, Agape ATP Corp (NASDAQ:ATPC) which lost 36.08% to settle at 1.63 and IO Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:IOBT) which was down 33.33% to 1.00 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2135 to 711 and 70 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2684 fell and 697 advanced, while 93 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 33.25% to 20.72.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.12% or 3.05 to $2,524.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October fell 4.30% or 3.16 to hit $70.39 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract fell 4.79% or 3.71 to trade at $73.81 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.25% to 1.10, while USD/JPY fell 0.90% to 145.57.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.08% at 101.71.
