Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Technology, Telecoms and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.98%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.46%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 2.92% or 3.71 points to trade at 130.71 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 1.77% or 0.61 points to end at 35.11 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 1.52% or 2.49 points to 166.82 in late trade.
Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 8.04% or 14.80 points to trade at 169.30 in late trade. Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) declined 6.95% or 25.28 points to end at 338.24 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) shed 2.45% or 10.02 points to 399.04.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which rose 12.46% to 43.41, Tyler Technologies Inc (NYSE:TYL) which was up 9.42% to settle at 458.45 and Carrier Global Corp (NYSE:CARR) which gained 9.20% to close at 59.81.
The worst performers were Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) which was down 10.56% to 441.38 in late trade, Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) which lost 9.67% to settle at 84.92 and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) which was down 8.56% to 44.68 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were iSun Inc (NASDAQ:ISUN) which rose 83.19% to 0.17, Barfresh Food Group Inc (NASDAQ:BRFH) which was up 65.45% to settle at 1.82 and Safe & Green Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:SGBX) which gained 51.56% to close at 0.22.
The worst performers were E-Home Household Service Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:EJH) which was down 73.54% to 0.77 in late trade, Tevogen Bio Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:TVGN) which lost 43.33% to settle at 0.85 and Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (NASDAQ:CSSE) which was down 38.87% to 0.26 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1954 to 901 and 60 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2192 fell and 1157 advanced, while 128 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.76% to 15.37.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.24% or 5.55 to $2,343.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 1.21% or 1.00 to hit $83.81 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 1.41% or 1.24 to trade at $89.26 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.31% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.20% to 155.65.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.26% at 105.43.
