Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Oil & Gas and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.12%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.41%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.08% or 1.79 points to trade at 45.61 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) added 2.57% or 4.84 points to end at 193.04 and Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) was up 2.28% or 1.27 points to 57.04 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), which lost 2.56% or 3.91 points to trade at 148.90 in late trade. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) declined 2.54% or 4.56 points to end at 175.10 and Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) shed 2.32% or 2.94 points to 124.02.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which rose 10.22% to 17.15, Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was up 5.63% to settle at 33.48 and Dominion Energy Inc (NYSE:D) which gained 4.26% to close at 46.70.
The worst performers were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was down 7.16% to 188.14 in late trade, Albemarle Corp (NYSE:ALB) which lost 6.73% to settle at 133.19 and Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD) which was down 6.46% to 8.11 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Ocean Biomedical Inc (NASDAQ:OCEA) which rose 104.00% to 4.08, Phunware Inc (NASDAQ:PHUN) which was up 75.28% to settle at 12.41 and Jaguar Health Inc (NASDAQ:JAGX) which gained 61.58% to close at 0.14.
The worst performers were Joann Inc (NASDAQ:JOAN) which was down 43.68% to 0.29 in late trade, Biovie Inc (NASDAQ:BIVI) which lost 43.65% to settle at 1.07 and Astra Space Inc (NASDAQ:ASTR) which was down 39.83% to 0.80 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1592 to 1266 and 74 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2021 fell and 1421 advanced, while 111 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.90% to 13.49.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.38% or 28.95 to $2,124.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 1.53% or 1.22 to hit $78.75 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 0.87% or 0.73 to trade at $82.82 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.17% to 1.09, while USD/JPY rose 0.28% to 150.52.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 103.79.
