Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.13%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.81%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 3.31% or 4.10 points to trade at 127.90 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 2.90% or 6.11 points to end at 216.73 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.58% or 4.69 points to 186.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which lost 2.87% or 14.61 points to trade at 494.65 in late trade. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) declined 2.34% or 8.05 points to end at 336.19 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shed 1.90% or 4.85 points to 249.99.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 6.05% to 209.86, Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) which was up 3.31% to settle at 127.90 and Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) which gained 2.90% to close at 216.73.
The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 5.91% to 17.68 in late trade, Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which lost 5.40% to settle at 17.71 and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 5.01% to 37.75 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Senti Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:SNTI) which rose 51.27% to 0.42, Presto Automation Inc (NASDAQ:PRST) which was up 39.14% to settle at 0.10 and TROOPS Inc (NASDAQ:TROO) which gained 36.04% to close at 2.68.
The worst performers were Blue World Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:BWAQ) which was down 50.47% to 4.24 in late trade, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (NASDAQ:CSSE) which lost 39.43% to settle at 0.12 and Maxeon Solar Technologies Ltd (NASDAQ:MAXN) which was down 35.66% to 0.55 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1912 to 915 and 94 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2135 fell and 1210 advanced, while 115 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.77% to 12.22.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.08% or 1.85 to $2,341.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 2.24% or 1.83 to hit $83.37 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.91% or 1.62 to trade at $86.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.26% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.40% to 161.48.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 105.50.
