Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Technology, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.46%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.81%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 1.61%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), which rose 0.93% or 0.81 points to trade at 88.05 at the close. Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT) added 0.68% or 0.51 points to end at 76.01 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 0.54% or 0.82 points to 152.24 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ), which lost 1.99% or 0.91 points to trade at 44.84 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 1.87% or 1.32 points to end at 69.21 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 1.49% or 0.48 points to 31.76.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Signet Jewelers Ltd (NYSE:SIG) which rose 4.56% to 63.00, Darden Restaurants Inc (NYSE:DRI) which was up 2.90% to settle at 92.69 and Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which gained 2.78% to close at 4.800.
The worst performers were Arconic Inc (NYSE:ARNC) which was down 9.04% to 21.84 in late trade, Seagate Technology PLC (NASDAQ:STX) which lost 6.79% to settle at 39.51 and Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was down 4.11% to 151.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Dextera Surgical Inc (NASDAQ:DXTR) which rose 29.62% to 0.3453, Moleculin Biotech Inc (NASDAQ:MBRX) which was up 30.26% to settle at 1.98 and Applied DNA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:APDN) which gained 25.71% to close at 1.760.
The worst performers were Rewalk Robotics Ltd (NASDAQ:RWLK) which was down 30.00% to 2.10 in late trade, Alder Bioph (NASDAQ:ALDR) which lost 27.94% to settle at 13.47 and Neothetics Inc (NASDAQ:NEOT) which was down 23.73% to 0.54 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2077 to 1047 and 131 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1624 fell and 854 advanced, while 140 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 12.22% to 11.11.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.24% or 3.03 to $1249.43 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 1.87% or 0.81 to hit $44.19 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.87% or 0.86 to trade at $46.90 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.48% to 1.1346, while USD/JPY rose 0.45% to 112.36.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.04% at 96.10.
