Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Utilities, Technology and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.22%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.19%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which rose 1.69% or 0.79 points to trade at 47.60 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.78% or 0.90 points to end at 115.73 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) was up 0.63% or 0.26 points to 41.80 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which lost 3.28% or 3.89 points to trade at 114.55 in late trade. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (NYSE:DD) declined 1.32% or 0.73 points to end at 54.56 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 1.28% or 1.00 points to 77.06.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Baxalta Inc (NYSE:BXLT) which rose 14.42% to 37.93, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) which was up 7.49% to settle at 121.00 and Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE:VMC) which gained 6.77% to close at 95.73.
The worst performers were Mallinckrodt (NYSE:MNK) which was down 13.86% to 107.00 in late trade, Allstate Corporation (NYSE:ALL) which lost 10.23% to settle at 62.28 and NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) which was down 10.15% to 20.01 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Lendingtree Inc (NASDAQ:TREE) which rose 40.98% to 116.44, Ipc Healthcare Ord (NASDAQ:IPCM) which was up 35.56% to settle at 79.25 and Codexis Inc (NASDAQ:CDXS) which gained 28.97% to close at 4.140.
The worst performers were Net Element International, Inc. (NASDAQ:NETE) which was down 43.10% to 0.28 in late trade, LB Foster Company (NASDAQ:FSTR) which lost 26.07% to settle at 20.70 and ID Systems Inc (NASDAQ:IDSY) which was down 25.88% to 3.98 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1741 to 1328; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1385 fell and 1366 advanced, while 10 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.50% to 13.00.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to $1087.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 0.24% or 0.11 to hit $45.97 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 0.13% or 0.07 to trade at $50.25 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.60% to 1.0886, while USD/JPY rose 0.23% to 124.33.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.00% at 98.05.
