Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Oil & Gas, Utilities and Healthcare sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.14%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.27%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 1.82% or 2.47 points to trade at 138.07 at the close. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) added 0.56% or 0.17 points to end at 30.27 and Visa Inc (NYSE:V) was up 0.38% or 0.31 points to 82.15 in late trade.
Biggest losers included General Electric Company (NYSE:GE), which lost 2.55% or 0.78 points to trade at 29.75 in late trade. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 1.15% or 0.72 points to end at 61.81 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) shed 1.07% or 0.92 points to 84.97.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were CSX Corporation (NASDAQ:CSX) which rose 3.74% to 45.99, CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) which was up 3.07% to settle at 35.25 and Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) which gained 2.71% to close at 145.28.
The worst performers were Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) which was down 12.72% to 54.88 in late trade, AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which lost 3.98% to settle at 739.35 and Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 3.59% to 14.76 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Gordmans Stores Inc (NASDAQ:GMAN) which rose 14.34% to 0.855, ViewRay Inc (NASDAQ:VRAY) which was up 18.33% to settle at 4.970 and Marinus Pharma (NASDAQ:MRNS) which gained 18.10% to close at 1.37.
The worst performers were DryShips Inc (NASDAQ:DRYS) which was down 33.17% to 5.40 in late trade, KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which lost 24.95% to settle at 0.2000 and Aviat Networks Inc (NASDAQ:AVNW) which was down 23.33% to 10.3500 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1728 to 1492 and 45 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1531 fell and 989 advanced, while 104 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.08% to 11.78.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.93% or 11.25 to $1216.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.62% or 0.33 to hit $52.89 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.23% or 0.13 to trade at $55.36 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.42% to 1.0748, while USD/JPY fell 1.38% to 113.05.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.63% at 100.14.
