Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Consumer Goods, Utilities and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.16% to hit a new 1-month low, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.19%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.20%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 2.05% or 0.65 points to trade at 32.35 at the close. The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) added 0.97% or 1.02 points to end at 105.75 and United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX) was up 0.89% or 1.04 points to 118.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which lost 1.40% or 0.57 points to trade at 40.12 in late trade. McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) declined 1.36% or 1.31 points to end at 94.98 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) shed 1.31% or 0.38 points to 28.29.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Mylan Inc (NASDAQ:MYL) which rose 6.68% to 59.00, Nabors Industries Ltd (NYSE:NBR) which was up 5.22% to settle at 12.21 and Denbury Resources Inc (NYSE:DNR) which gained 4.77% to close at 7.90.
The worst performers were Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) which was down 5.63% to 37.54 in late trade, EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) which lost 4.55% to settle at 25.73 and PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) which was down 2.93% to 97.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were MELA Sciences Inc (NASDAQ:MELA) which rose 59.33% to 3.33, Warren Resources Inc (NASDAQ:WRES) which was up 26.24% to settle at 1.275 and Capnia Inc (NASDAQ:CAPN) which gained 25.63% to close at 6.96.
The worst performers were Zogenix Inc (NASDAQ:ZGNX) which was down 25.75% to 1.240 in late trade, Resonant Inc (NASDAQ:RESN) which lost 25.12% to settle at 9.72 and KBS Fashion Group Ltd (NASDAQ:KBSF) which was down 19.93% to 4.86 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1710 to 1099; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1694 rose and 1077 declined, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 1.14% to 16.88.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.55% or 6.40 to $1153.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April rose 0.03% or 0.01 to hit $48.30 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract rose 2.61% or 1.47 to trade at $57.86 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 1.33% to 1.0554, while USD/JPY rose 0.22% to 121.40.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.04% at 99.64.
