Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Basic Materials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.39%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 1.28%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 3.71% or 2.87 points to trade at 80.16 at the close. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) added 3.61% or 4.17 points to end at 119.69 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.63% or 0.76 points to 29.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO), which lost 0.22% or 0.09 points to trade at 41.68 in late trade. Visa Inc (NYSE:V) added 0.23% or 0.17 points to end at 74.38 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) gained 0.32% or 0.34 points to 105.82.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Precision Castparts Corporation (NYSE:PCP) which rose 19.10% to 230.92, Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which was up 13.49% to settle at 5.47 and Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (NYSE:FCX) which gained 10.64% to close at 11.65.
The worst performers were Monster Beverage 1990 Corp (NASDAQ:MNST) which was down 2.98% to 144.73 in late trade, Edison International (NYSE:EIX) which lost 2.41% to settle at 59.54 and Entergy Corporation (NYSE:ETR) which was down 1.92% to 68.91 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Reading International B Inc (NASDAQ:RDIB) which rose 1000.00% to 99999.508, Aquinox Pha (NASDAQ:AQXP) which was up 81.19% to settle at 18.88 and Modsys International Ltd (NASDAQ:MDSY) which gained 34.78% to close at 1.550.
The worst performers were Karyopharm Thera (NASDAQ:KPTI) which was down 39.05% to 13.44 in late trade, Net Element International, Inc. (NASDAQ:NETE) which lost 21.21% to settle at 0.26 and Sfx Enterta (NASDAQ:SFXE) which was down 22.62% to 2.36 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1928 to 542 and 4 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1759 rose and 800 declined, while 4 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 8.44% to 12.26.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.89% or 9.70 to $1103.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 2.15% or 0.94 to hit $44.81 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 3.18% or 1.56 to trade at $50.80 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.48% to 1.1017, while USD/JPY rose 0.25% to 124.58.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.45% at 97.23.
