Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.38%, while the S&P 500 index added 1.49%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.15%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Chevron Corporation (N:CVX), which rose 4.38% or 3.84 points to trade at 91.45 at the close. Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) added 3.59% or 2.80 points to end at 80.90 and Wal-Mart Stores Inc (N:WMT) was up 2.57% or 1.45 points to 57.87 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Pfizer Inc (N:PFE), which lost 0.33% or 0.11 points to trade at 33.16 in late trade. Intel Corporation (O:INTC) declined 0.03% or 0.01 points to end at 32.10 and General Electric Company (N:GE) gained 0.26% or 0.08 points to 30.36.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were FLIR Systems Inc (O:FLIR) which rose 10.33% to 28.72, Range Resources Corporation (N:RRC) which was up 9.14% to settle at 34.62 and Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (N:COG) which gained 8.78% to close at 22.56.
The worst performers were Urban Outfitters Inc (O:URBN) which was down 7.43% to 22.67 in late trade, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide (N:HOT) which lost 3.63% to settle at 72.27 and Electronic Arts Inc (O:EA) which was down 2.72% to 67.99 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were KaloBios Pharmaceuticals Inc (O:KBIO) which rose 90.69% to 1.720, Myos Corpor (O:MYOS) which was up 56.98% to settle at 2.70 and ReachLocal Inc (O:RLOC) which gained 27.99% to close at 0.70.
The worst performers were Clovis Oncology Inc (O:CLVS) which was down 69.59% to 30.24 in late trade, Wave Systems Corp (O:WAVX) which lost 30.95% to settle at 0.116 and Ascent Solar Technologies Inc (O:ASTI) which was down 29.63% to 0.133 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2428 to 1011 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1573 rose and 1052 declined, while 66 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.01% to 18.07.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.08% or 0.90 to $1081.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 2.71% or 1.10 to hit $41.84 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.72% or 0.32 to trade at $44.79 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.80% to 1.0688, while USD/JPY rose 0.48% to 123.19.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.59% at 99.47.
