Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods, IT and Technology sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 declined 0.26%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.25%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were UltraTech Cement Ltd (NS:ULTC), which rose 1.25% or 39.40 points to trade at 3185.00 at the close. Lupin Ltd (NS:LUPN) added 1.16% or 16.75 points to end at 1466.00 and NTPC Limited (NS:NTPC) was up 1.11% or 1.80 points to 163.65 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Bharti Infratel Limited (NS:BHRI), which lost 2.66% or 9.200 points to trade at 336.250 in late trade. Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NS:SUN) declined 2.17% or 13.60 points to end at 614.30 and ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) shed 1.63% or 3.75 points to 226.20.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI) which rose 1.31% to 5169.00, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which was up 1.22% to settle at 1193.15 and Lupin Ltd (BO:LUPN) which gained 1.17% to close at 1465.95.

The worst performers were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) which was down 2.25% to 614.40 in late trade, ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) which lost 1.44% to settle at 226.10 and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (BO:TCS) which was down 1.07% to 2312.75 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 824 to 635 and 75 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1366 fell and 1167 advanced, while 162 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India Vix, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 1.15% to 14.7050.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 0.18% or 2.05 to $1135.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 0.43% or 0.23 to hit $53.53 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.40% or 0.22 to trade at $55.57 a barrel.

USD/INR was up 0.12% to 67.894, while EUR/INR rose 0.06% to 70.5957.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.05% at 103.21.
