Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Banking, Metals and Consumer Durables sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 fell 5.74%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 5.94%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Cipla Ltd. (NS:CIPL), which rose 3.71% or 21.90 points to trade at 611.50 at the close. Bharti Airtel Ltd. (NS:BRTI) added 3.24% or 16.65 points to end at 530.95 and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (NS:SUN) was up 0.33% or 1.55 points to 466.00 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Hindalco Industries Ltd. (NS:HALC), which lost 10.68% or 13.90 points to trade at 116.30 in late trade. ICICI Bank Ltd (NS:ICBK) declined 10.56% or 40.15 points to end at 340.00 and Vedanta Ltd (NS:VDAN) shed 10.44% or 9.35 points to 80.20.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which rose 3.28% to 531.20, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (BO:SUN) which was up 0.04% to settle at 465.05 and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which lost 1.69% to close at 360.40.

The worst performers were ICICI Bank Ltd (BO:ICBK) which was down 10.96% to 338.25 in late trade, Bajaj Finance Ltd (BO:BJFN) which lost 10.21% to settle at 2080.50 and Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd (BO:HDFC) which was down 10.08% to 1723.85 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1228 to 287 and 89 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1765 fell and 534 advanced, while 170 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 28.49% to 43.6700.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.11% or 18.90 to $1719.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 7.43% or 1.47 to hit $18.31 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.80% or 0.74 to trade at $25.70 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.16% to 75.627, while EUR/INR fell 0.53% to 82.7250.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.34% at 99.438.
