Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Mining sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Encana Corporation (TO:ECA), which rose 9.96% or 0.53 points to trade at 5.85 at the close. ATS Automation Tooling Systems Inc. (TO:ATA) added 8.97% or 0.82 points to end at 9.96 and New Gold Inc . (TO:NGD) was up 7.76% or 0.33 points to 4.58 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX), which lost 19.50% or 21.42 points to trade at 88.41 in late trade. MEG Energy Corp (TO:MEG) declined 9.96% or 0.47 points to end at 4.25 and Aecon Group Inc . (TO:ARE) shed 4.91% or 0.72 points to 13.95.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 762 to 490 and 337 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 1.80% to 25.42.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 1.52% or 18.50 to $1238.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 3.36% or 1.10 to hit $33.88 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 3.44% or 1.22 to trade at $36.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.23% to 0.7383, while CAD/EUR rose 0.24% to 0.6788.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.14% at 98.27.
