Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Mining, Utilities and Clean Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.89%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canaccord Financial Inc (TO:CF), which rose 10.98% or 0.77 points to trade at 7.78 at the close. Novagold Resources Inc. (TO:NG) added 2.98% or 0.15 points to end at 5.18 and CCL Industries Inc (TO:CCLb) was up 1.72% or 2.52 points to 149.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Sherritt International Corporation (TO:S), which lost 7.31% or 0.19 points to trade at 2.41 in late trade. Trican Well Service Ltd. (TO:TCW) declined 5.49% or 0.22 points to end at 3.79 and Centerra Gold Inc. (TO:CG) shed 5.05% or 0.40 points to 7.52.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 910 to 476 and 223 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 5.09% to 13.62.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 0.73% or 8.60 to $1176.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 2.76% or 1.65 to hit $57.99 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 2.66% or 1.70 to trade at $62.10 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.36% to 0.8002, while CAD/EUR fell 0.11% to 0.7115.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.14% at 95.48.
