Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Energy, Materials and Financials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 1.20% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Atkinsrealis Group Inc (TSX:ATRL), which rose 5.84% or 3.20 points to trade at 57.99 at the close. Celestica Inc. (TSX:CLS) added 3.48% or 2.62 points to end at 77.95 and NexGen Energy Ltd. (TSX:NXE) was up 3.30% or 0.31 points to 9.70 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 9.16% or 0.35 points to trade at 3.47 in late trade. SSR Mining Inc (TSX:SSRM) declined 4.27% or 0.29 points to end at 6.50 and Alamos Gold Inc (TSX:AGI) shed 4.23% or 0.93 points to 20.94.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 756 to 214 and 80 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.20% to 10.16.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 1.51% or 35.60 to $2,319.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.60% or 0.47 to hit $78.03 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.46% or 0.38 to trade at $82.22 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.11% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.52% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.19% at 104.81.
