Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Thursday, as losses in the Healthcare, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.88%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Mullen Group Ltd . (TSX:MTL), which rose 7.82% or 0.63 points to trade at 8.69 at the close. FirstService Corp (TSX:FSV) added 7.00% or 9.93 points to end at 151.77 and Teck Resources Ltd B (TSX:TECKb) was up 6.89% or 1.00 points to 15.51 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Aurinia Pharmaceuticals Inc (TSX:AUP), which lost 16.20% or 3.61 points to trade at 18.67 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 9.97% or 2.43 points to end at 21.95 and First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR) shed 5.05% or 0.95 points to 17.88.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 621 to 387 and 128 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.90% or 16.70 to $1881.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.10% or 0.88 to hit $41.02 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 2.24% or 0.99 to trade at $43.30 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.03% to 0.7454, while CAD/EUR fell 0.15% to 0.6431.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.17% at 94.773.
