Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Energy, Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.78% to hit a new 1-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO), which rose 5.28% or 0.330 points to trade at 6.580 at the close. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) added 5.11% or 0.44 points to end at 9.05 and Alacer Gold Corp (TSX:ASR) was up 4.61% or 0.260 points to 5.900 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Encana Corporation (TSX:ECA), which lost 6.66% or 0.40 points to trade at 5.61 in late trade. GENIVAR Inc . (TSX:WSP) declined 6.55% or 5.24 points to end at 74.76 and Whitecap Resources Inc . (TSX:WCP) shed 5.90% or 0.24 points to 3.83.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 653 to 403 and 112 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 10.29% to 15.00.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.44% or 6.55 to $1510.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 0.30% or 0.16 to hit $52.59 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 0.02% or 0.01 to trade at $58.11 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.00% to 0.7504, while CAD/EUR rose 0.01% to 0.6849.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.17% at 98.830.
