Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Clean Technology, Consumer Staples and Telecoms sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.27% to hit a new 3-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 4.56% or 4.05 points to trade at 92.94 at the close. Cargojet Inc (TSX:CJT) added 4.14% or 5.08 points to end at 127.74 and goeasy Ltd (TSX:GSY) was up 3.30% or 6.14 points to 192.03 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 6.92% or 0.24 points to trade at 3.23 in late trade. Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP) declined 4.57% or 0.17 points to end at 3.55 and Alimentation Couche Tard Inc (TSX:ATD) shed 3.78% or 2.98 points to 75.90.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 609 to 349 and 101 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.91% to 9.56.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.27% or 29.35 to $2,347.35 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.29% or 0.23 to hit $78.39 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.27% or 0.22 to trade at $82.53 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.07% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.37% to 0.68.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.05% at 105.13.
