Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Healthcare, Consumer Discretionary and IT sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.08%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Majestic Silver Corp. (TSX:FR), which rose 12.34% or 1.63 points to trade at 14.84 at the close. Wesdome Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:WDO) added 11.41% or 1.25 points to end at 12.15 and Endeavour Silver Corp. (TSX:EDR) was up 11.07% or 0.580 points to 5.820 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Linamar Corporation (TSX:LNR), which lost 8.46% or 6.80 points to trade at 73.55 in late trade. WELL Health Technologies Corp (TSX:WELL) declined 5.68% or 0.230 points to end at 3.820 and Lithium Americas Corp (TSX:LAC) shed 5.23% or 1.92 points to 34.82.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 518 to 506 and 107 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 9.27% to 19.09 a new 3-month high.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 1.69% or 30.65 to $1843.05 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 0.93% or 0.79 to hit $85.62 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract rose 0.74% or 0.65 to trade at $88.16 a barrel.

CAD/USD was up 0.21% to 0.8006, while CAD/EUR rose 0.00% to 0.7053.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.22% at 95.510.
