Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Clean Technology, Mining and Information Technology sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.27%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Veresen Inc. (TO:VSN), which rose 6.15% or 0.87 points to trade at 15.01 at the close. Yamana Gold Inc. (TO:YRI) added 5.99% or 0.27 points to end at 4.78 and Sherritt International Corporation (TO:S) was up 5.88% or 0.12 points to 2.16 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS), which lost 13.68% or 0.29 points to trade at 1.83 in late trade. Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp (TO:AQN) declined 5.87% or 0.53 points to end at 8.50 and Canadian Energy Services&Technology (TO:CEU) shed 5.86% or 0.33 points to 5.30.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 830 to 587 and 186 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was up 1.31% to 17.01.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.31% or 3.60 to $1155.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 4.14% or 1.95 to hit $45.10 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 4.52% or 2.58 to trade at $54.50 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.71% to 0.7828, while CAD/EUR rose 0.66% to 0.7462.
The US Dollar Index was up 1.22% at 100.32.
