Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Energy, Financials and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.47%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG), which rose 7.01% or 0.19 points to trade at 2.90 at the close. Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD) added 6.00% or 0.37 points to end at 6.54 and Torex Gold Resources Inc. (TO:TXG) was up 5.83% or 0.070 points to 1.270 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Bellatrix Exploration Ltd (TO:BXE), which lost 8.85% or 0.34 points to trade at 3.50 in late trade. Pretium Resources Inc. (TO:PVG) declined 7.68% or 0.63 points to end at 7.57 and Lightstream Resources Ltd (TO:LTS) shed 6.33% or 0.10 points to 1.48.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 749 to 694 and 199 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was down 0.12% to 17.26.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.20% or 2.40 to $1211.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 3.42% or 1.85 to hit $52.44 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 3.70% or 2.31 to trade at $60.22 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.26% to 0.8051, while CAD/EUR fell 0.17% to 0.7062.
The US Dollar Index was unchanged 0.00% at 94.15.
