Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Mining, Energy and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.70%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which rose 21.15% or 0.22 points to trade at 1.26 at the close. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) added 21.00% or 1.30 points to end at 7.49 and Baytex Energy Corp (TO:BTE) was up 15.42% or 0.74 points to 5.54 in late trade.
Biggest losers included ProMetic Life Sciences Inc. (TO:PLI), which lost 7.89% or 0.15 points to trade at 1.75 in late trade. Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR) declined 6.50% or 3.58 points to end at 51.48 and Superior Plus Corp (TO:SPB) shed 5.89% or 0.67 points to 10.71.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 736 to 644 and 167 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.07% to 20.96.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was up 0.80% or 9.10 to $1146.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 5.21% or 2.41 to hit $48.67 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 5.57% or 2.75 to trade at $51.99 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.41% to 0.7672, while CAD/EUR fell 0.32% to 0.6804.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.72% at 95.53.
