Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Clean Technology, Telecoms and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.79%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Ballard Power Systems Inc (TSX:BLDP), which rose 10.78% or 1.30 points to trade at 13.36 at the close. Bombardier Inc (TSX:BBDb) added 10.42% or 0.100 points to end at 1.060 and MAG Silver Corp (TSX:MAG) was up 7.82% or 0.89 points to 12.27 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Aphria Inc (TSX:APHA), which lost 4.12% or 0.200 points to trade at 4.660 in late trade. Secure Energy Services Inc . (TSX:SES) declined 3.74% or 0.15 points to end at 3.86 and Alaris Royalty Corp . (TSX:AD) shed 3.48% or 0.69 points to 19.16.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 705 to 427 and 74 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.73% or 27.15 to $1593.85 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 5.85% or 2.62 to hit $47.38 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 5.94% or 2.95 to trade at $52.62 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.79% to 0.7500, while CAD/EUR fell 0.33% to 0.6738.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.57% at 97.520.
