Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Materials and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 1.07% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which rose 8.54% or 7.50 points to trade at 95.32 at the close. NovaGold Resources Inc (TSX:NG) added 7.27% or 0.42 points to end at 6.20 and Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP) was up 5.62% or 0.79 points to 14.85 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Capstone Mining Corp (TSX:CS), which lost 4.92% or 0.51 points to trade at 9.86 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TSX:FM) declined 3.48% or 0.64 points to end at 17.73 and Topaz Energy Corp (TSX:TPZ) shed 2.71% or 0.69 points to 24.79.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 646 to 307 and 96 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.82% to 8.43.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 1.79% or 43.50 to $2,472.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.24% or 1.00 to hit $79.84 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.20% or 1.02 to trade at $83.83 a barrel.
CAD/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 0.73, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.04% to 0.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.03% at 103.92.
