Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.38% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Eldorado Gold Corp (TSX:ELD), which rose 12.00% or 0.72 points to trade at 6.72 at the close. Yamana Gold Inc (TSX:YRI) added 9.52% or 0.28 points to end at 3.22 and Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) was up 8.72% or 0.36 points to 4.49 in late trade.
Biggest losers included BlackBerry Ltd (TSX:BB), which lost 4.29% or 0.51 points to trade at 11.38 in late trade. Hudson's Bay Company (TSX:HBC) declined 3.96% or 0.39 points to end at 9.46 and Uni-Select Inc. (TSX:UNS) shed 3.41% or 0.44 points to 12.47.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 661 to 420 and 103 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 2.11% to 11.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was up 3.22% or 43.40 to $1392.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 5.87% or 3.17 to hit $57.14 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.12% or 0.08 to trade at $64.59 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.03% to 0.7579, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.00% to 0.6712.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.44% at 96.153.
