Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the IT, Telecoms and Consumer Staples sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.01% to hit a new 3-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were iA Financial (TSX:IAG), which rose 7.64% or 3.42 points to trade at 48.17 at the close. Lightspeed POS Inc (TSX:LSPD) added 6.17% or 2.25 points to end at 38.71 and Cineplex Inc . (TSX:CGX) was up 6.06% or 0.47 points to 8.22 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX), which lost 7.55% or 2.03 points to trade at 24.85 in late trade. Crescent Point Energy Corp . (TSX:CPG) declined 6.70% or 0.15 points to end at 2.09 and OceanaGold Corporation (TSX:OGC) shed 6.54% or 0.240 points to 3.430.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 645 to 416 and 119 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0% to 11.27.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.40% or 7.80 to $1945.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 2.33% or 0.96 to hit $40.31 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 1.16% or 0.51 to trade at $43.58 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.74% to 0.7439, while CAD/EUR fell 1.17% to 0.6280.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.55% at 92.922.
