Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Materials and REITs sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.01%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were First Majestic Silver Corp. (TO:FR), which rose 4.90% or 0.36 points to trade at 7.70 at the close. Enercare Inc (TO:ECI) added 4.78% or 0.86 points to end at 18.86 and Exchange Income Corporation (TO:EIF) was up 4.15% or 1.360 points to 34.150 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Crew Energy Inc (TO:CR), which lost 7.10% or 0.13 points to trade at 1.70 in late trade. Ensign Energy Services Inc (TO:ESI) declined 6.71% or 0.47 points to end at 6.53 and Bombardier Inc (TO:BBDb) shed 5.75% or 0.230 points to 3.770.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 591 to 506 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.20% to 15.14.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 1.15% or 15.20 to $1335.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April fell 0.19% or 0.12 to hit $62.45 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.20% or 0.13 to trade at $65.67 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.66% to 0.7765, while CAD/EUR rose 0.10% to 0.6258.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.43% at 89.57.
