Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Friday, as gains in the S&P/TSX Canadian Energy, S&P/TSX Canadian Mining and S&P/TSX Canadian Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.25%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canadian Oil Sands Limited (TO:COS), which rose 20.58% or 1.34 points to trade at 7.85 at the close. Lightstream Resources Ltd (TO:LTS) added 16.92% or 0.11 points to end at 0.76 and NuVista Energy Ltd. (TO:NVA) was up 11.56% or 0.740 points to 7.140 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Eldorado Gold Corporation (TO:ELD), which lost 13.11% or 0.92 points to trade at 6.10 in late trade. Autocanada Inc (TO:ACQ) declined 6.87% or 2.39 points to end at 32.38 and Newalta Corporation (TO:NAL) shed 5.76% or 0.81 points to 13.25.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 800 to 655 and 186 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of options, was up 3.27% to 20.55.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 2.29% or 28.80 to $1284.70 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in March rose 7.26% or 3.23 to hit $47.77 a barrel, while the March Brent Oil contract rose 6.82% or 3.35 to trade at $52.48 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.64% to 0.7873, while CAD/EUR fell 0.40% to 0.6973.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.05% at 95.01.
