Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Monday, as gains in the Industrials, Financials and Health Care sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.78%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.39%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 0.31%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were United Technologies Corporation (NYSE:UTX), which rose 2.10% or 2.51 points to trade at 121.94 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.75% or 1.98 points to end at 114.86 and Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) was up 1.61% or 0.47 points to 29.39 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which lost 1.24% or 0.41 points to trade at 32.78 in late trade. Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) declined 0.32% or 0.27 points to end at 85.36 and AT&T Inc (NYSE:T) shed 0.28% or 0.10 points to 33.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Macerich Company (NYSE:MAC) which rose 7.08% to 92.86, Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:ATI) which was up 5.02% to settle at 33.04 and Constellation Brands Inc (NYSE:STZ) which gained 3.90% to close at 115.24.
The worst performers were Transocean Ltd (NYSE:RIG) which was down 6.06% to 14.58 in late trade, Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK) which lost 6.00% to settle at 14.26 and Southwestern Energy Company (NYSE:SWN) which was down 5.67% to 22.31 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were RMG Networks Holding Corp (NASDAQ:RMGN) which rose 77.67% to 1.830, Inventergy (NASDAQ:INVT) which was up 42.05% to settle at 0.80 and Recro Pharm (NASDAQ:REPH) which gained 35.76% to close at 4.48.
The worst performers were Authentidate Holding Corp (NASDAQ:ADAT) which was down 47.35% to 0.326 in late trade, AcelRx Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:ACRX) which lost 36.84% to settle at 5.520 and Meru Networks Inc (NASDAQ:MERU) which was down 32.20% to 1.600 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1654 to 1158; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1573 rose and 1198 declined, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.99% to 15.05.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was up 0.18% or 2.10 to $1166.40 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April rose 0.72% or 0.35 to hit $49.97 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 2.25% or 1.34 to trade at $58.47 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.11% to 1.0853, while USD/JPY rose 0.27% to 121.15.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.12% at 97.62.
