Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Healthcare and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 1.10%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.06%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Company (N:BA), which rose 1.94% or 2.81 points to trade at 147.35 at the close. EI du Pont de Nemours and Company (N:DD) added 1.65% or 1.10 points to end at 67.57 and International Business Machines (N:IBM) was up 1.58% or 2.17 points to 139.78 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Walt Disney Company (N:DIS), which lost 0.16% or 0.17 points to trade at 107.08 in late trade. Coca-Cola Company (N:KO) added 0.51% or 0.22 points to end at 43.71 and Exxon Mobil Corporation (N:XOM) gained 0.53% or 0.42 points to 79.16.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Chesapeake Energy Corporation (N:CHK) which rose 12.53% to 4.58, CONSOL Energy Inc (N:CNX) which was up 4.70% to settle at 8.24 and Kohl`s Corporation (N:KSS) which gained 3.32% to close at 48.81.
The worst performers were Southwestern Energy Company (N:SWN) which was down 1.31% to 6.76 in late trade, Kinder Morgan Inc (N:KMI) which lost 1.05% to settle at 15.10 and Columbia Pipeline Group Inc (N:CPGX) which was down 1.00% to 19.77 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Inventergy (O:INVT) which rose 61.19% to 2.160, Superconductor Technologies Inc (O:SCON) which was up 41.82% to settle at 0.312 and Warren Resources Inc (O:WRES) which gained 37.90% to close at 0.230.
The worst performers were Capitol Acquisition Corp III (O:CLAC) which was down 31.16% to 6.54 in late trade, DryShips Inc (O:DRYS) which lost 29.57% to settle at 0.175 and Paragon Shipping Inc (O:PRGN) which was down 21.74% to 0.18 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2444 to 983 and 3 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1805 rose and 802 declined, while 76 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.44% to 16.16.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.01% or 0.10 to $1068.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February rose 2.81% or 1.03 to hit $37.84 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 3.06% or 1.12 to trade at $37.74 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.31% to 1.0934, while USD/JPY rose 0.05% to 120.47.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.25% at 98.23.
