Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Mining, Materials and Energy sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.74% to hit a new 52-week low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were TransCanada Corporation (TO:TRP), which rose 5.15% or 2.27 points to trade at 46.37 at the close. Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT) added 3.94% or 0.05 points to end at 1.32 and Alacer Gold Corp (TO:ASR) was up 3.70% or 0.09 points to 2.52 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Centerra Gold Inc (TO:CG), which lost 13.32% or 1.06 points to trade at 6.90 in late trade. First Quantum Minerals Ltd . (TO:FM) declined 11.49% or 0.51 points to end at 3.93 and HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) shed 11.07% or 0.58 points to 4.66.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 991 to 400 and 226 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was unchanged 0.00% to 22.95 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 1.18% or 12.70 to $1063.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 1.75% or 0.62 to hit $36.24 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract fell 0.91% or 0.35 to trade at $37.97 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.21% to 0.7284, while CAD/EUR rose 0.29% to 0.6630.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.14% at 97.75.
