Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 1.48%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were GENIVAR Inc . (TO:WSP), which rose 2.44% or 1.02 points to trade at 42.87 at the close. Intertain Group (TO:IT) added 2.00% or 0.35 points to end at 17.82 and Gildan Activewear Inc. (TO:GIL) was up 1.79% or 0.78 points to 44.42 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Torex Gold Resources Inc . (TO:TXG), which lost 19.81% or 0.210 points to trade at 0.850 in late trade. Alamos Gold Inc (TO:AGI) declined 18.20% or 0.97 points to end at 4.36 and Barrick Gold Corporation (TO:ABX) shed 15.96% or 1.82 points to 9.58.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1051 to 369 and 214 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 6.53% to 10.12.
In commodities trading, Gold for August delivery was down 3.15% or 35.70 to $1096.20 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September fell 1.90% or 0.97 to hit $50.23 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract fell 1.05% or 0.60 to trade at $56.50 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.18% to 0.7694, while CAD/EUR fell 0.18% to 0.7105.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.09% at 98.17.
