Investing.com – Brazil equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Industrials, Basic Materials and Real Estate sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Sao Paulo, the Bovespa fell 1.52% to hit a new 5-year low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Bovespa were Estacio Participacoes SA (SA:ESTC3), which rose 8.51% or 1.06 points to trade at 13.52 at the close. Braskem SA (SA:BRKM5) added 7.02% or 1.82 points to end at 27.75 and Oi SA (SA:OIBR3) was up 2.50% or 0.06 points to 2.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Metalurgica Gerdau SA (SA:GOAU4), which lost 12.93% or 0.19 points to trade at 1.28 in late trade. JBS SA (SA:JBSS3) declined 9.17% or 1.05 points to end at 10.40 and Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais (SA:USIM5) shed 8.96% or 0.12 points to 1.22.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 188 to 100 and 5 ended unchanged on the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Brazil Etf Volatility, which measures the implied volatility of Bovespa options, was up 1.04% to 45.61.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was up 1.34% or 14.50 to $1092.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in February fell 5.63% or 2.02 to hit $33.95 a barrel, while the March US coffee C contract fell 2.74% or 3.38 to trade at $119.62 .
USD/BRL was up 0.60% to 4.0312, while EUR/BRL rose 0.91% to 4.3477.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.15% at 99.31.
