Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Staples, Healthcare and Consumer Discretionary sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.16%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Interfor Corp (TO:IFP), which rose 6.00% or 0.97 points to trade at 17.13 at the close. Brookfield Property Partners LP (TO:BPY_u) added 5.62% or 1.49 points to end at 27.98 and Saputo Inc . (TO:SAP) was up 4.90% or 1.47 points to 31.44 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Yamana Gold Inc . (TO:YRI), which lost 7.72% or 0.20 points to trade at 2.39 in late trade. IAMGold Corporation (TO:IMG) declined 7.54% or 0.15 points to end at 1.84 and Kinross Gold Corporation (TO:K) shed 7.08% or 0.17 points to 2.23.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 826 to 585 and 182 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 8.80% to 14.96 a new 1-month high.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.13% or 1.40 to $1088.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in September rose 1.38% or 0.62 to hit $45.80 a barrel, while the September Brent oil contract rose 1.27% or 0.63 to trade at $50.15 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.20% to 0.7586, while CAD/EUR rose 0.32% to 0.6964.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.43% at 98.02.
