Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the IT, Consumer Staples and Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.05% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Silvercorp Metals Inc (TSX:SVM), which rose 7.36% or 0.450 points to trade at 6.560 at the close. Alacer Gold Corp (TSX:ASR) added 5.95% or 0.390 points to end at 6.950 and MAG Silver Corp (TSX:MAG) was up 5.33% or 0.69 points to 13.64 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Hexo Corp (TSX:HEXO), which lost 8.87% or 0.2600 points to trade at 2.6700 in late trade. Aurora Cannabis Inc (TSX:ACB) declined 5.67% or 0.19 points to end at 3.16 and Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN) shed 5.19% or 0.190 points to 3.470.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 620 to 430 and 130 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.63% to 11.15.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was up 0.40% or 5.85 to $1469.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.62% or 0.36 to hit $58.37 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.86% or 0.54 to trade at $63.16 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.23% to 0.7535, while CAD/EUR rose 0.14% to 0.6835.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.08% at 98.155.
