Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Clean Technology, Healthcare and IT sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 0.21% to hit a new 52-week high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Lucara Diamond Corp (TO:LUC), which rose 6.73% or 0.200 points to trade at 3.170 at the close. HudBay Minerals Inc. (TO:HBM) added 5.59% or 0.56 points to end at 10.57 and Stantec Inc. (TO:STN) was up 5.49% or 1.87 points to 35.93 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Detour Gold Corporation (TO:DGC), which lost 5.03% or 0.91 points to trade at 17.18 in late trade. Klondex Mines Ltd. (TO:KDX) declined 4.63% or 0.310 points to end at 6.390 and Kinross Gold Corporation (TO:K) shed 3.95% or 0.20 points to 4.86.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 804 to 403 and 114 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 2.77% to 11.60.
In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.85% or 10.35 to $1200.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 0.58% or 0.31 to hit $52.87 a barrel, while the March Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.20 to trade at $55.24 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.66% to 0.7650, while CAD/EUR rose 0.49% to 0.7117.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.36% at 99.91.
