Investing.com – U.S. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Basic Materials, Technology and Oil & Gas sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.19%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.26%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.64%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD), which rose 2.59% or 3.10 points to trade at 122.80 at the close. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) added 1.36% or 1.68 points to end at 125.50 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 0.55% or 0.26 points to 47.27 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Wal-Mart Stores Inc (NYSE:WMT), which lost 3.38% or 2.43 points to trade at 69.48 in late trade. Cisco Systems Inc (NASDAQ:CSCO) declined 1.99% or 0.57 points to end at 28.25 and Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) shed 1.93% or 2.11 points to 106.94.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were TJX Companies Inc (NYSE:TJX) which rose 7.22% to 76.78, Ross Stores Inc (NASDAQ:ROST) which was up 3.72% to settle at 56.53 and Patterson Companies Inc (NASDAQ:PDCO) which gained 3.10% to close at 51.55.
The worst performers were Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which was down 5.75% to 85.70 in late trade, Micron Technology Inc (NASDAQ:MU) which lost 4.82% to settle at 16.39 and Genworth Financial Inc (NYSE:GNW) which was down 4.19% to 5.03 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Omeros Corporation (NASDAQ:OMER) which rose 72.03% to 25.03, Celsus Theraptcs (NASDAQ:CLTX) which was up 67.19% to settle at 1.020 and Wowo Ltd (NASDAQ:WOWO) which gained 25.00% to close at 7.40.
The worst performers were Akers Biosc (NASDAQ:AKER) which was down 18.52% to 3.08 in late trade, Speed Commerce Inc (NASDAQ:SPDC) which lost 18.43% to settle at 0.140 and 6D Global Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:SIXD) which was down 15.57% to 2.51 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1643 to 824 and 2 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1716 fell and 827 advanced, while 5 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.99% to 13.80.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.13% or 1.40 to $1117.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.31% or 0.56 to hit $42.97 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract fell 0.31% or 0.15 to trade at $48.59 a barrel.
EUR/USD was down 0.40% to 1.1034, while USD/JPY fell 0.02% to 124.38.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.15% at 96.98.
