Sterling under pressure as a consequence of the prospect of a no deal Brexit increasing while the FTSE 100 has jumped higher, after this morning’s announcement that the government is looking to dissolve parliament for a Queens Speech on October 14th.
Overall though this appears part and parcel of the ongoing battle between the various caucus of MPs who want to block a no deal Brexit at all costs and those who want to retain the option as part of the ongoing attempts to renegotiate the withdrawal agreement. Is it unconstitutional, and is it undemocratic. On the constitutional question, No it isn’t, but it does cut down the amount of time for anti Brexit MPs to come up with a mechanism to thwart no deal.
As for being undemocratic, it’s no more undemocratic than the attempts by the anti no deal brigade to parachute Ken Clarke into a government of national unity.
