Mercedes Benz Group: Is the Correction Over Already?

Published 28/11/2024, 07:33

Innovative solar paint: Mercedes-Benz is developing an efficient energy source for electric cars

Mercedes-Benz is researching a revolutionary solar technology that can be applied to vehicle bodies as an ultra-thin paste. At just 5 micrometres thick, the solar cells are thinner than a human hair, weigh just 50 grams per square metre and achieve an impressive 20 per cent efficiency.

Perhaps Mercedes Benz can work its way back to the top of the innovation leaders. A few decades ago, Mercedes regularly set standards and dominated the car market – worldwide.

Will the stock be worth buying again soon?

Major corrections usually end exactly when no one expects them, namely when sentiment couldn't be worse. This applies to the entire German automotive industry.

Versatile and highly efficient

The photovoltaic-active coating is flexible and can be applied to almost any vehicle surface. With an area of 11 square metres, about the size of a mid-sized SUV, the modules could generate up to 12,000 kilometres of driving performance per year under optimal conditions – based on the solar radiation in Stuttgart. The energy generated is used directly for the drive or fed into the high-voltage battery. Particularly practical: the system also works when the vehicle is switched off, and thus delivers energy continuously.

Regional differences in yield

Efficiency depends on factors such as shading, solar intensity and location. For example, in Stuttgart, up to 62 per cent of the average daily driving distance (52 kilometres) could be covered by solar energy alone. In sunnier regions like Los Angeles, it would even be possible to cover a vehicle's entire energy needs. Excess energy could be fed into the home's power grid via bidirectional charging – an environmentally friendly way to supply households with clean energy.

Environmentally friendly and cost-effective

The solar paint not only offers efficiency but also ecological advantages:

It does not require rare earths or silicon.
The raw materials used are non-toxic, readily available and fully recyclable.
The manufacturing costs are significantly lower than for conventional solar modules.

Looking to the future

The Mercedes-Benz research team is working on making the solar paint usable on all exterior surfaces of vehicles – regardless of shape and angle of inclination. This technology could significantly increase the range of electric cars in the future and reduce dependence on charging stations.

With this innovative approach, Mercedes-Benz is moving a step closer to sustainable mobility and showing how electric cars can be made even more efficient.
