Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.66%, while the S&P 500 index gained 1.01%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.43%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which rose 2.83% or 8.74 points to trade at 317.69 at the close. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) added 2.47% or 1.62 points to end at 67.31 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) was up 1.96% or 3.18 points to 165.46 in late trade.
Biggest losers included 3M Company (NYSE:MMM), which lost 5.72% or 10.05 points to trade at 165.58 in late trade. Pfizer Inc (NYSE:PFE) declined 5.03% or 2.02 points to end at 38.14 and Coca-Cola Company (NYSE:KO) shed 0.82% or 0.47 points to 57.01.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were PulteGroup Inc (NYSE:PHM) which rose 5.73% to 46.84, Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) which was up 5.69% to settle at 156.67 and Xerox Corp (NYSE:XRX) which gained 4.94% to close at 36.78.
The worst performers were BorgWarner Inc (NYSE:BWA) which was down 7.64% to 35.43 in late trade, 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) which lost 5.72% to settle at 165.58 and F5 Networks Inc (NASDAQ:FFIV) which was down 5.05% to 126.00 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Nanthealth LLC (NASDAQ:NH) which rose 56.49% to 2.050, Acceleron P (NASDAQ:XLRN) which was up 50.16% to settle at 79.39 and Vaxart Inc (NASDAQ:VXRT) which gained 37.03% to close at 0.8800.
The worst performers were Lianluo Smart Ltd (NASDAQ:LLIT) which was down 32.73% to 1.8500 in late trade, Allied Healthcare Products Inc (NASDAQ:AHPI) which lost 31.95% to settle at 2.960 and Cleveland BioLabs Inc (NASDAQ:CBLI) which was down 31.95% to 2.7900 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1971 to 827 and 80 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1776 rose and 837 declined, while 84 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 10.70% to 16.28.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.71% or 11.25 to $1566.15 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March rose 1.58% or 0.84 to hit $53.98 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 0.19% or 0.11 to trade at $59.22 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.03% to 1.1023, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 109.16.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 97.775.
