Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Tobacco, Pharmaceuticals & Biotech and Industrial Metals & Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 fell 0.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were Provident Financial PLC (LON:PFG), which rose 4.37% or 19.80 points to trade at 472.60 at the close. Rio Tinto PLC (LON:RIO) added 2.89% or 134.00 points to end at 4776.00 and Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO) was up 2.67% or 6.20 points to 238.20 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Old Mutual Ltd (LON:OMU), which lost 6.12% or 7.02 points to trade at 107.64 in late trade. Intu Properties PLC (LON:INTUP) declined 4.53% or 4.26 points to end at 89.74 and British American Tobacco PLC (LON:BATS) shed 3.28% or 98.00 points to 2886.50.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1124 to 1077 and 195 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.47% or 6.05 to $1277.55 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 1.14% or 0.67 to hit $59.30 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 0.09% or 0.06 to trade at $68.83 a barrel.
GBP/USD was down 0.11% to 1.2663, while EUR/GBP fell 0.10% to 0.8820.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.35% at 97.820.
