Investing.com – U.K. equities were lower at the close on Wednesday, as losses in the Fixed Line Telecommunications, Tobacco and Gas, Water & Multiutilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in London, the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 lost 0.14%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Investing.com United Kingdom 100 were St. James's Place PLC (LON:SJP), which rose 4.47% or 20.80 points to trade at 486.60 at the close. Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust PLC (LON:SMT) added 1.57% or 13.64 points to end at 883.64 and Unilever PLC (LON:ULVR) was up 1.54% or 66.00 points to 4,341.00 in late trade.
Biggest losers included National Grid PLC (LON:NG), which lost 7.67% or 86.50 points to trade at 1,041.00 in late trade. Severn Trent PLC (LON:SVT) declined 4.40% or 116.00 points to end at 2,523.00 and United Utilities Group PLC (LON:UU) shed 3.67% or 39.50 points to 1,037.50.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 735 to 645 and 78 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was down 1.12% or 26.80 to $2,366.10 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.32% or 0.25 to hit $77.32 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 0.22% or 0.18 to trade at $81.72 a barrel.
GBP/USD was unchanged 0.08% to 1.27, while EUR/GBP unchanged 0.02% to 0.85.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.04% at 104.79.
