Investing.com – U.K. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Tobacco, Beverages and Health Care Equipment & Services sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in London, the FTSE 100 rose 0.60% to hit a new all time high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the FTSE 100 were Diageo (LONDON:DGE), which rose 2.50% or 46.00 points to trade at 1885.50 at the close. Imperial Tobacco Group (LONDON:IMT) added 2.20% or 66.00 points to end at 3063.00 and British American Tobacco (LONDON:BATS) was up 1.92% or 69.00 points to 3663.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Tullow Oil Plc (LONDON:TLW), which lost 3.36% or 14.10 points to trade at 406.10 in late trade. Royal Mail (LONDON:RMG) declined 2.32% or 10.40 points to end at 437.60 and Randgold Resources (LONDON:RRS) shed 1.67% or 85.00 points to 5005.00.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1023 to 1000 and 407 ended unchanged on the London Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 1.92% or 23.60 to $1203.50 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude Oil for delivery in April fell 2.16% or 1.16 to hit $52.51 a barrel, while the April Brent Oil contract fell 0.56% or 0.34 to trade at $61.05 a barrel.
GBP/USD was down 0.14% to 1.5343, while EUR/GBP rose 0.49% to 0.7426.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.22% at 94.25.
