Investing.com – South Africa equities were lower at the close on Tuesday, as losses in the Other Mineral Extractors, Resources and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Johannesburg, the FTSE/JSE Top 40 lost 2.96% to hit a new 3-month low.
The biggest gainers of the session on the FTSE/JSE Top 40 were Growthpoint Properties Ltd (JO:GRTJ), which rose 0.31% or 8 points to trade at 2610 at the close. Naspers Ltd (JO:NPNJn) fell 0.16% or 287 points to end at 182807 and Mondi Ltd (JO:MNDJ) was down 0.77% or 204 points to 26578 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Caphold (JO:CPIJ), which lost 7.81% or 3601.00 points to trade at 43161.12 in late trade. Kumba Iron Ore Ltd (JO:KIOJ) declined 6.54% or 850 points to end at 12070 and Anglo American PLC (JO:AGLJ) shed 5.60% or 959 points to 16270.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 168 to 66 and 19 ended unchanged on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
In commodities trading, Crude oil for August delivery was down 1.74% or 0.92 to $52.09 a barrel. Meanwhile, Brent oil for delivery in August fell 0.97% or 0.56 to hit $56.60 a barrel, while the August Gold contract fell 0.93% or 10.90 to trade at $1155.70 a troy ounce.
USD/ZAR was up 0.97% to 12.5084, while EUR/ZAR rose 0.20% to 13.7258.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.64% at 97.05.
