Proactive Investors - Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (EPA:LVMH) has appointed British designer Sarah Burton as creative director of its Givenchy fashion house with immediate effect.

Macclesfield-born Burton was creative director of Alexander McQueen between 2010 and 2023, a period that saw her design the Princess of Wales’s wedding dress (pictured) and be awarded an OBE for services to the fashion industry.

She will be responsible for the creative direction of all women's and men's collections for the 70-year-old Fench fashion house, with her first collection to be presented in March 2025.

"It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel," said Burton, adding that she is "excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs".

Givenchy chair Sidney Toledano called Burton "an exceptional creative talent" with a "unique vision and approach to fashion [that] will be invaluable to this iconic maison, known for its audacity and haute couture".

CEO Alessandro Valenti said Burton's "remarkable career path and creative vision have already won her a vast fan base, and we are certain that under her direction, Givenchy will continue to innovate and captivate an extensive audience across the world stage".

Burton joined Alexander McQueen in 1996 while still studying at Central Saint Martins, becoming head of design four years later under Lee Alexander McQueen and being appointed creative director upon the company founder's death.

She left the UK fashion house in October 2023.
