India shares lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 1.10%

Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Auto, Banking and Fast Moving Consumer Goods sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 lost 1.10%, while the BSE Sensex 30 index fell 0.87%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (NS:ONGC), which rose 1.69% or 5.20 points to trade at 312.00 at the close. NTPC Limited (NS:NTPC) added 0.88% or 1.45 points to end at 165.50 and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (NS:TCS) was up 0.67% or 14.75 points to 2210.00 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Ambuja Cements Ltd. (NS:ABUJ), which lost 3.54% or 7.65 points to trade at 208.40 in late trade. Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (NS:BPCL) declined 3.54% or 22.45 points to end at 612.20 and Eicher Motors Ltd. (NS:EICH) shed 3.30% or 753.55 points to 22090.80.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were Oil And Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (BO:ONGC) which rose 1.43% to 311.30, NTPC Limited (BO:NTPC) which was up 0.82% to settle at 165.45 and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (BO:TCS) which gained 0.58% to close at 2206.25.

The worst performers were Asian Paints Ltd. (BO:ASPN) which was down 3.33% to 910.25 in late trade, AXIS Bank Ltd. (BO:AXBK) which lost 2.56% to settle at 444.60 and Bajaj Auto Limited (BO:BAJA) which was down 2.52% to 2651.00 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 946 to 521 and 66 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 1519 fell and 1079 advanced, while 126 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India Vix, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 7.47% to 16.1925.

In commodities trading, Gold for February delivery was down 0.53% or 6.15 to $1155.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 4.56% or 2.35 to hit $53.85 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 4.29% or 2.33 to trade at $56.66 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.02% to 67.463, while EUR/INR rose 0.32% to 71.4899.

The US Dollar Index was down 0.19% at 101.41.
