Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Industrials and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.80% to hit a new 1-month high.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Penn West Petroleum Ltd. (TO:PWT), which rose 26.15% or 0.34 points to trade at 1.64 at the close. Bankers Petroleum Ltd . (TO:BNK) added 17.49% or 0.390 points to end at 2.620 and Mitel Networks Corporation (TO:MNW) was up 16.36% or 1.50 points to 10.67 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Concordia Healthcare (TO:CXR), which lost 11.10% or 5.67 points to trade at 45.43 in late trade. Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) declined 7.76% or 0.76 points to end at 9.03 and Russel Metals Inc . (TO:RUS) shed 6.79% or 1.57 points to 21.55.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 736 to 615 and 169 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 4.47% to 18.60 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 0.86% or 9.90 to $1138.80 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 3.80% or 1.81 to hit $49.62 a barrel, while the November Brent oil contract rose 3.76% or 1.93 to trade at $53.26 a barrel.
CAD/USD was up 0.35% to 0.7685, while CAD/EUR rose 0.03% to 0.6817.
The US Dollar Index was down 0.26% at 95.40.
