Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Energy, Financials and Mining sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite fell 0.39%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canexus Corporation (TO:CUS), which rose 3.75% or 0.06 points to trade at 1.66 at the close. BlackBerry Ltd (TO:BB) added 2.76% or 0.32 points to end at 11.92 and West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. (TO:WFT) was up 2.73% or 1.78 points to 67.09 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Labrador Iron Ore Royalty Corp (TO:LIF), which lost 4.66% or 0.69 points to trade at 14.13 in late trade. Bonavista Energy Corporation (TO:BNP) declined 4.30% or 0.29 points to end at 6.45 and Cameco Corporation (TO:CCO) shed 4.13% or 0.76 points to 17.63.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 716 to 664 and 187 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 7.04% to 17.63.
In commodities trading, Gold for April delivery was down 0.65% or 7.80 to $1197.00 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in May fell 6.00% or 3.08 to hit $48.34 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract fell 5.25% or 3.11 to trade at $56.08 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 1.02% to 0.7931, while CAD/EUR fell 1.05% to 0.7285.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.08% at 97.63.
