Investing.com – Canada equities were lower at the close on Friday, as losses in the Materials, Energy and Utilities sectors propelled shares lower.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite declined 1.28%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Canadian Energy Services & Technology Corp (TO:CEU), which rose 13.03% or 0.710 points to trade at 6.160 at the close. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc (TO:VRX) added 7.58% or 1.72 points to end at 24.42 and New Flyer Industries Inc (TO:NFI) was up 5.84% or 2.22 points to 40.21 in late trade.
Biggest losers included MAG Silver Corp . (TO:MAG), which lost 13.48% or 2.46 points to trade at 15.79 in late trade. Silver Standard Resources Inc . (TO:SSO) declined 13.30% or 1.95 points to end at 12.71 and Hudson's Bay Company (TO:HBC) shed 10.63% or 1.76 points to 14.80.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 743 to 425 and 110 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was up 17.55% to 15.47.
In commodities trading, Gold for December delivery was down 3.30% or 41.80 to $1224.60 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 3.22% or 1.44 to hit $43.22 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract fell 2.57% or 1.18 to trade at $44.66 a barrel.
CAD/USD was down 0.50% to 0.7385, while CAD/EUR fell 0.19% to 0.6802.
The US Dollar Index was up 0.21% at 99.00.
